Recruitment and Retention Masterclass: Sustaining Excellence in the Classroom

Wednesday 21st February 2018 | Mercure Southgate Hotel, Exeter | 09:15 - 12:45

Overview of the Recruitment and Retention Masterclass

The issues relating to teacher retention are complex. Just as the numbers of pupils and the demand for new teachers begins to increase sharply, excessive workloads, conflicting policies and attacks on pay are not only driving away new recruits but equally unsettling established, experienced teachers.

In October 2016, it was confirmed that nearly a third of teachers who joined the profession in 2010 had left teaching within five years. This raises a series of issues to consider around the initial teacher training, recruitment process, mentoring and the support provided to ensure teacher wellbeing.

This masterclass pulls together two leading researchers in the field who will not only share the findings from their recent research projects that have in total collected views from over 5000 teachers but will importantly also provide practical example of what you can do within your own school to limit the impact of the ‘retention crisis’ and create an environment where teachers will thrive and your pupils will flourish.
